A Postmodernism Primer

Actually, my favorite part is found at YouTube in comments:

-What was the point of this video?

-Exactly what are you trying to say?

-These people mock what they don't understand.

-Totally lame -- it would help if you had any idea what you were talking about...

So, this video is my most recent reminder that all those seemingly wasted years in church were totally worth it. I get the "meanings" when viewing fundamentalist Christian art.

Are you jealous?

zowie. Sadly, I remember when I used to think that way (think being the relative term). Everything has to be so black and white to them...either skydaddy tells you what you can/can't do and you either fly or fry or everything is anarchy and chaos. Sad.

Great points, Michelle.

Reminds me of a Robyn Blumner quote: "I have never understood why the fallback position to unanswerable questions about the universe is that an all-powerful, all-knowing being intervened. To me, "we don't know yet" is a fine response."

It seems that the fear of the unknown is so painful that some are willing to settle for just about any explanation - no matter how inplausible - in it's place.

Of course, then, they project their own self-doubts onto atheists: "What's the point of waking up in the morning if you have no Purpose?," "Why not rape and murder if there's no God?" etc. --- which really says more about them than it does about us, as any good mother would advise :)

Hi MrsGrovine,

I agree that the attitudes on display in this video would repel - not attract - a lot of people. Are some drawn to the culture war aspect of fundamentalism, however, or is it just in my mind? It's hard to tell, but it seems to excite some. And, fill pews. But, I could be wrong. Maybe cultural warriors are just "squeaky wheels getting the grease."

I am highly amused by these Christianists identifying themselves with the Dark Side of the Force. Truer than they know, what?

Also, that "news anchor"'s hair was not at all postmodern, and neither were her glasses.

*I started out not liking this blog*

Yes, you've been a trooper, MrsGrovine! :D

*but then figured, "what the heck...if my beliefs can't stand up, they're not worth having."*

I think that's such a great thing to say. In fact, recently I've been thinking along those same lines with respect to homeschooling, even taking jabs at sacred cows in order to examine what I consider to be "gray areas" more closely.

(Laughing) I didn't even notice. How scary is THAT!

Guess I'll need to go back and re-watch the video now. Thanks for that ;)

Wish me luck (deep breath).
